Sandra is an appraiser, instructor, author, and course developer.  The Appraisal Institute published her book, “Residential Green Valuation Tools” in April 2014.  She spearheaded the development of the AI Residential and Commercial Green and Energy Efficient Addendums. In July 2016, the Appraisal Institute presented her the Outstanding Service Award.

Sandra is a consultant to builders, governmental agencies, utility companies, real estate agents, and energy organizations. She speaks on the valuation of green features at events such as GreenBuild, IBS, EEBA, ACI, The White House Conference Center, National Association of REALTORS®, National Association of Home Builders, and Appraisal Institute Conferences. 

She was on the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory team that produced in 2015, “Selling into the Sun: Price Premium Analysis of a Multi-State Dataset of Solar Homes” and “Appraising Into The Sun.”  You will find her webinar, “6 Things You Didn’t Know About Appraising Green Home Features,” as part of the Online NAR Green Courses.

Sandra authored the study, "What is Green Worth? Unveiling High-Performance Home Premiums in Washington, D.C.,” funded by the District Department of Energy and sponsored by Institute for Market Transformation.

In 2016 the Appraisal Institute presented her with the Outstanding Service Award.

Mr. Agee serves as a Research Assistant for the Virginia Center for Housing Research (VCHR) and PhD student in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech. He began his career in the construction industry at age 16, working for a small volume residential contractor in Powhatan, VA. He has worked with Viridiant as a RESNET HERS Rater since 2009. Mr. Agee has published and presented his work on human factors engineering, affordable zero energy housing and Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) at national and international conferences.  He is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and Virginia Tech’s Myers-Lawson School of Construction.

Educated as an architect, Jacob has over 25 years of technology and green building experience. He developed KB Home’s “Double Zero” homes.  These ground-breaking homes are designed to produce as much energy as they’re expected to consume, and include energy storage.  At the same time, they recycle greywater, eliminating the need for fresh water in landscape irrigation.  Other recent projects include launching nearly 100 solar-powered communities, and building over 150 LEED certified homes.  Previously, Jacob developed KB Home’s Energy Performance Guide, which provides KB homeowners with information on the relative energy efficiency and estimated gas and electricity costs.

Jacob serves on the board of directors for Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET).  He also serves on the technical committee for Leading Builders of America, and on the advisory board for TecHome Builder.  In recent years he chaired Orange County’s Urban Land Institute’s Sustainable Communities Council.

Steve Baden has worked in the residential energy efficiency field for over twenty five years, including eighteen years with home energy ratings and energy mortgages on both the state and national levels, and ten years administering a state energy office. Mr. Baden initiated the "Warm Homes for Alaskans Initiative" which received the "1993 National Award for the Most Outstanding State Housing Program" from the National Council of State Housing Agencies. Steve was also awarded "Lifetime Achievement Awards" from the U.S. Department of Energy and RESNET.

Mike Barcik is a Senior Engineer for Technical Services at Southface.  With B.S and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, Mike is the author of numerous technical resources and has developed and lead thousands of trainings for RESNET, BPI, LEED, DOE, EPA and other programs. He's active in energy code development and often leads workshops on the latest code changes. Since 1999, Mike has trained over 1,400 individuals in RESNET's Home Energy Rating System (HERS) program and in 2010, helped create the Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier program to certify over a thousand individuals for blower door and duct leakage testing, as required by the 2009 IECC.  Mike served as LEED Faculty for BD+C, EB O&M, and Homes as well as helped develop and teach the EarthCraft family of sustainable programs. He recently helped author Decatur Georgia's High Performance Building Ordinance which requires 3rd party certification for new single-family, multi-family, and commercial projects.

David has been with Masco Home Services for over 12 years, and is currently the VP of Building Science for Masco Home Services and the Environments For Living Program. The Environments For Living program is a building science based program which promotes a systems approach to home construction. The program focuses on the envelope and HVAC system to provide for homes that are durable, safe, comfortable, and energy efficient. To date the program has over 175,000 homes enrolled with the great majority also being Energy Star Homes. During David’s time as the VP of Building Science Masco Home Services has grown its performance testing footprint to become one of the largest HERS rater networks in the United States, conducting testing for code, HERS index, Energy Star and the EFL program.   Prior to coming to Masco he was the VP – National Builder Program for EIC Corporation, managing the Certainteed High Performance Home Program. He also spent 20 years with Pennsylvania Power and Light in various positions in their residential Marketing & Energy Services Department. David is a member of the RESNET Board and also a member of the EEBA Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

A native of Pennsylvania, Dave attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA graduating with a degree in Marketing. In addition he has an Associates Degrees in Plumbing and Heating technology.

Dave is the Director of Research with the Center for Energy and Environment. He has worked there since 1988 and has over 30 years experience in energy efficiency and indoor air quality in commercial and residential buildings. He has been the manager of a variety of applied research, energy audit, and program development projects. His research includes measurements of commercial building envelope and duct sealing, aerosol envelope sealing and ventilation improvements for multifamily units, and the efficiency of tankless water heaters and combination systems in houses. He was the manager of the CEE’s IAQ group for the Sound Insulation Program.

Sam Bowles specializes in building industry communications and market research to understand and shape perceptions on building technologies and designs. In his nearly 10 years with Newport Partners he has conducted numerous market research studies, created and implemented communications plans, and developed Social Media initiatives for multiple public and private sector clients. He currently serves as the Communications Director for the DOE Zero Energy Ready Home Program, assisting innovative home builders in the U.S. with social media marketing tools and strategies to increase market share of high performance homes. Sam has an MBA from Columbus State University (2012) and holds a Bachelors from Union College.

Hank Brekke is Lead Developer for the HouseRater application. Brekke has enhanced RSR’s software to track new energy efficient housing developments across the Midwest through the rating process. He optimizes the app infrastructure by building and maintaining Docker and Amazon EC2 Container Service infrastructure. He also designs and implements new app features extending from UI/UX design mockups to deep underlying server architecture utilizing numerous Amazon Web Service products.

Brekke’s goal is to build inspiring products across a range of platforms to help others change the world through technology.

Brekke received his Associate of Arts from Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

Terry Brennan is a geeky building guy.  He has studied buildings since the 1970’s.  Because of his background in physics, biology and building construction, Mr. Brennan combines theory and practice in a unique and integrated way.  Mr. Brennan has provided research, training, curriculum development and program support for the EPA, building owners and managers, individual homeowners, and several state health departments.  He is the primary author of the USEPA Moisture Control Guidance for Building Design, Construction and Maintenance, published 2014 www.epa.gpv/iaq.  He is ecstatic to no longer be a member of the ASHRAE 62.2  committee or to chair the ABAA Whole Building Testing Committee (ASTM WK35913).

Valerie served as the Director of Marketing and Business Development at North American Technician Excellence (NATE), overseeing business development, advertising, marketing, and public relations activities for the organization. Prior to joining NATE, Ms. Briggs worked as Senior Director of External Communications and Marketing Outreach for the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), a national health care trade association representing the interests of the owners of over 23,000 independent retail pharmacies. She was previously responsible for marketing and training for the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work Program, a healthcare and employment program for people with disabilities.

Martha Brook is a licensed mechanical engineer in the state of California. She has worked at the California Energy Commission for 24 years, where she has gained experience in long-term energy demand forecasting, building energy efficiency standards, and research and development of energy efficient technologies for residential and commercial buildings. Martha most recently led the efforts to update the residential and nonresidential compliance software for the 2013 Standards. Martha’s professional experience outside the Commission includes mechanical engineering design and software development for energy management systems.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the California State University at Humboldt in Environmental Resources Engineering.

Prior to Joining APA-The Engineered Wood Association in July 2014, my career in the construction industry began over 10 years ago as the Design and Quality Manager for Accent Homes Inc. a production builder in northern Indiana. This position gave me a significant amount of knowledge on the home building industry in general. I managed many aspects for the company from drafting and design to customer walk-thru and warranty service. I always had a great interest in the building code and joined the Indiana Builders Association’s Code Review Committee.  Joining this committee gave me knowledge of code development and the code development process. At the time the committee was reviewing the energy code provisions of the code, this immediately caught my interest. I soon moved into the energy rating industry, working as Director of Research and Development for Energy Diagnostics Inc. a rating firm in Northern Indiana, servicing Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. I was involved in code development, training and education in all three states, and soon became known as the “go to” energy code guy. To expand my knowledge I became involved with the energy codes at the national level attending ICC hearings and becoming an ICC Certified Residential Energy Code Inspector and Plans Examiner as well as a HERS Rater, and Certified Green Professional (CGP). In Joining APA-The Engineered Wood Association, I work to educate the wood industry on the impacts of energy efficiency and educate the Raters, Code Officials and Builders on the advantages of wood construction for energy efficiency and sustainability.

Rod Buchalter is the Vice President of Sales and Market Development for Renewability Energy Inc. He is also the President of the Brantford Home Builders' Association in Ontario, Canada. Rod spent 20 years with Union Gas, a large natural gas utility in Southwestern Ontario, in various Account Management roles working with builders, retailers and HVACS promoting Drain Water Heat Recovery ( DWHR). Currently he develops residential and commercial DWHR programs in partnership with utilities and large production builders like KB Home. Rod graduated from the Business program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario in 1989 with a major in Marketing.

Thiel Butner is a Principal at Pando Alliance, a mission-driven firm specializing in ratings, green certifications, and investment-grade audits for affordable multifamily housing in Maryland and the surrounding region.  She works closely with all of the major green building programs, coaches project teams through their certifications, and provides technical oversight to her staff.  As a Principal, she remains active in the field, focusing her attention on the most technically challenging programs, including PHIUS+ and ES MFHR.

Thiel graduated from Prescott College with BA in Environmental Studies and a concentration in Ecological Design and is currently pursuing an MBA at Hood College.  She serves on RESNET’s SDC 300, the Multifamily Rater Specialization Task Force of the SCD 200, and the Sampling Subcommittee of the SDC 900.

Ms. Butterfield is a sustainability consultant at SWA, working with residential buildings. Her expertise is in sustainable consulting services, program certification support and implementation of high performance building technologies. With architects, developers, builders, and homeowners, she develops specific sustainability strategies for both new construction and renovations. Karla is an integral part of the initial strategic planning sessions and stakeholder workshops based on program criteria; she verifies in the LEED® for Homes, Passive House, Energy Star, and National Green Building Standard programs.

I get up every day (nearly) excited to come to work and lead the incredible staff of professionals at EnergyLogic. I am truly a lucky person to have this job and be one of the leaders of this organization. EnergyLogic is based in Colorado and serves a wide variety of clients in the residential and light commercial energy efficiency and sustainability spaces. In short, we help make buildings better.

I started out my professional life as a pilot in the Air Force after graduating from the Air Force Academy. That experience prepared me for a great deal in life but not for meaningful employment outside of the wild blue yonder. Fortunately, I stumbled into energy and sustainability and spent several wonderful years at Southface Energy institute in Atlanta before striking out on my own in Colorado. With my wonderful wife, Wynne Maggi, we started a company which eventually morphed into EnergyLogic. I’ve been blessed along the way to have learned a tremendous amount from a wide variety of people and thus far none of my mistakes has sunk either myself or the company. In fact, EnergyLogic is a leader in our industry, an innovator and we pride ourselves on doing things the right way.

I’m also blessed with a pair of talented daughters, a great community and the great hope that I will continue to find new and exciting things to do in this life.

Olga M. Cano is an Environmental Engineer in the Homes Program at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense® Program. She is involved in the development and implementation of the WaterSense Homes specification and certification system. Through this program, the EPA aims to promote water efficient practices in buildings.  Prior to joining EPA in 2015, Ms. Cano worked as an architect in the hospitality and residential sector for 7+ years and then went on to serve in the Peace Corps as a Water & Sanitation Volunteer in Peru. Ms. Cano holds a B.A. in Architecture from Florida International University and a Masters of Science in Environmental Engineering from Michigan Technological University.

Brian Christensen has more than 20 years of engineering experience, 16 years as a HERS Rater and 8 years on the REM software team. Initially tasked with breaking the software repeatedly before each new release (all in the name of teamwork), he now provides the building science side of implementing features in REM.  Also, as a LEED® for Homes™ Green Rater & QAD, he has extensive experience in multifamily residential projects.  In these LEED roles, he provided field testing, engineering support, and project management to support energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability.  Brian served on the original RESNET Multifamily Working Group, and serves now in the RESNET MF Subcommittee to develop a multifamily HERS standard.

Matt Christie is a TRC Associate Director with expertise in energy efficiency and energy use reduction for the built environment using a whole-building approach. He has program management and technical experience in program design; program implementation; energy modeling and simulation; home performance energy audits; data and process analysis; and heat transfer and fluid dynamics. Matt was the primary designer of the California’s Advanced Homes Program for both the 2013 and upcoming 2016 Title 24 Energy Codes. Additionally, Matt works in the Pacific Northwest coordinate and align voluntary green certification programs around regional goals.  Matt is Chair of the California Association of Building Energy Consultants (CABEC) and a Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) for residential buildings.

Mr. Cooper is the Senior Vice President of PEG. Mr. Cooper’s twenty seven years of expertise in the evaluation, design and control of the built environment have helped to establish PEG as an industry leader and innovator; providing utility and municipal demand side control programs as well as code compliance inspections and new construction third party program implementation. PEG currently operates in 27 states as licensed Mechanical Engineers and is a RESNET Provider, BPI Accredited Contractor, ICC/NAHB National Green Building Standard Verifier and USGBC LEED for Homes Provider. PEG is a 2016 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year and a 2016 NGBS Green Partner of the Year.

Mr. Cottrell is the Vice President of Technical Services for the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association, the association that represents the fiber glass, rock and slag wool manufacturers. Its role is to promote energy efficiency and environmental preservation through the use of fiber glass, rock wool and slag wool insulation as well as encourage safe production and use of these materials.    Charles’ primary responsibility is to represent the insulation industry’s interests in the energy, building and mechanical codes and standards arena.  Prior to joining NAIMA in 1998, Mr. Cottrell worked for the National Association of Home Builders in their building codes division and a mechanical contracting firm where he designed and oversaw the installation of commercial HVAC systems.  He has owned a construction company whose primary business was residential construction and commercial building maintenance.  After graduating from Virginia Tech where he received his B.S. in mechanical engineering, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a helicopter pilot for eight years.

Mr. Crandell has over 30 years of experience in construction, engineering, and innovative building technology research for private and public sector clients.  He has conducted benchmark studies of major natural disasters and conducted research to address significant structural, energy, and building science challenges.  His work has helped to propel many innovative technologies into the International Codes and consensus standards. Emelie has leveraged her background in physics to become an expert building scientist. Her foundation in field-based activities has honed her skills in building analysis and software modeling. She conducted a two-year long research project on cooling systems in Massachusetts that included a comprehensive inspection of 80 homes with data monitoring.

Emelie is President of the Northeast Home Energy Rating Systems Alliance, a RESNET certified Rater, Trainer and Quality Assurance Designer, NAHB green verifier, EPA universal refrigerant handler, and holds two BPI certifications. 

She manages the HERS Provider division of Performance Systems Development and oversees quality assurance for more than 70 raters.

Emelie is currently project manager for developing a local home energy rating and disclosure program incorporating the HERS Index in Tompkins County, New York.

Mr. Laverne Dalgleish has been actively involved in the construction industry for over 30 years and has specialized in building envelopes, energy efficiency and building performance for both commercial and residential construction.
Starting as a builder in the 1970’s, Laverne constructed some of the most energy efficient houses in North America, including houses that were Net Zero ready with a focus on high levels of airtightness and insulation.
Since then, he has championed to transform the building industry to raise the bar in professionalism for building trades and focus on quality processes in construction to ensure long-term high performance buildings.
Over the years, Laverne has become a frequent presenter across North America on a variety of topics as they relate to building envelopes, energy efficiency, green building practices, and standards and quality of construction.
Laverne is actively involved in the standards development process and has been involved with International Organization of Standardization (ISO) for over two decades, travelling around the world and creating development standards for the industry. 
A big believer in scientific research, Laverne has been a leader and participated in a number of commercial and residential building research projects with groups such as Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Syracuse University, University of Waterloo and the National Research Council of Canada.  Laverne has been involved in a number of utility demand side management programs and worked with various government departments across North American such as the U.S Department of Energy, Natural Resources Canada, Environmental Protection Agency, Environment Canada and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

As an Energy Consultant with Vermont Energy Investment Corporation since 2004, Sara has field tested and rated hundreds of homes.  In addition to being a HERS Rater, she is an NGBS verifier, a former LEED verifier, and recently became a RESNET QAD.  In addition to her work at VEIC, Sara is Chair of her local Energy Committee and sits on the Development Review Board.

Scott Doyle joined the HERS industry as a HERS Rater in 2003. Since being certified as a rater Scott has inspected and tested the energy performance of thousands of homes across a variety of construction types and climate zones. In 2007 he became a RESNET certified Quality Assurance Designee and Trainer. Mr. Doyle oversaw quality assurance activities for EnergyLogic and five other RESNET HERS Rating Providers. This involved quality assurance oversight of nearly 10,000 homes annually that were HERS rated. From 2008-2014, as a Rater Trainer, Scott trained hundreds of energy professionals across the U.S. using a variety of formats including field, classroom, and e-learning.

Craig Drumheller is the Director of Construction Codes & Standards for the National Association of Home Builders. Prior to his position with NAHB, he was a senior research engineer with the NAHB Research Center. He has been involved in building code development and residential energy efficiency research for over 18 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Syracuse University.

Laurel Elam has been with RESNET since 2010. She started as RESNET's Conference Coordinator and it 2013 began also serving as Quality Assurance Manager. She is now RESNET's Director of Accreditation and Quality Assurance. Ms. Elam graduated from Appalachian State University, with a degree in Appropriate Technology and a minor in Sustainable Development and began her career in the industry in 2004 working in at the Appalachian State University Energy Center.

Lindsey Elton oversees client services, helping project teams develop, design, and construct better-performing buildings. Additionally, she helps project teams throughout the Midwest build third-party verified green homes that meet everything from LEED to Passive House standards.

Lindsey is certified in advanced building science and building diagnostic testing. She started her career with the Chicago Green Homes Program, then moved to the HEET Weatherization Program, which provided workforce training and weatherization improvements to lower-income homes throughout Chicago. Lindsey currently oversees Eco Achievers’ field testing and inspections, providing hands on problem solving and building analysis. She also works with commercial clients on wall assembly commissioning and infiltration performance testing. A native of the Detroit area, Lindsey has many ties there and is working on developing business for Eco Achievers in that market.

Lindsey volunteers as Vice President of the Passive House Alliance of Chicago and frequently speaks on topics related to LEED, Passive House, and building science. She is a credentialed LEED for Homes Green Rater, RESNET and ENERGY STAR rater, and PHIUS+ rater.

Sean Evensen-Shanley serves as Director of Residential Operations at Viridiant, a Virginia-based non-profit committed to supporting sustainable construction.  He has worked with hundreds of single family and multifamily projects pursuing EarthCraft, ENERGY STAR, and LEED for Homes certification. Sean’s role at Viridiant includes quality assurance, data analysis, training, program management, and new program development. Sean has been a HERS Rater since 2008 and QAD since 2009. He graduated from Emerson College with a Bachelor of Arts in New Media and from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Master of Environmental Studies. Sean previously served as the Director of Customer Success at WegoWise, a Boston-based company providing utility benchmarking software.

Tim is an analyst and inspector of new construction in Maryland; these inspections are conducted to determine if the house meets Energy Star® standards.  Training for Raters and builders is provided along with analytical services.  ICF is a global consulting provider with over 5,000 professionals focused on making big things possible for our clients.  One core area of ICF’s expertise is Energy.  ICF is implementing many aspects of the energy-savings programs for the state’s major utilities and also is implementing similar programs in several states across the US.

Prior to joining ICF, Tim was a building envelope specialist for a top-end residential home builder in Maryland; this builder was dedicated to building tight yet stunning houses.  He also owned and operated a residential home inspection company for 10 years and was a software engineer for over 20 years. Tim has a BS Ed in Physics and Mathematics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

 Philip Fairey has been a member of the RESNET Board of Directors since 1998 and has served as President of RESNET twice, once from 2004-2006 and once from 2008-2010. Philip is currently a member of RESNET’s ANSI-accredited Standards Development Committee 300 and is Chairman of RESNET’s Standards Management Board.

Philip has more than 30 years of experience in building science research at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) where he has served as Deputy Director of FSEC since 1990. He has had primary responsibility for more than 30 major building science research contracts totaling more than $14 million. Philip has extensive expertise in combined heat and moisture transfer in buildings; heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; building energy efficiency; humidity and moisture control; indoor air quality (IAQ); energy codes and standards; computer simulation and modeling; and building energy-efficiency rating systems. He is the author of more than 40 peer-reviewed technical papers and more than 100 technical reports.

Philip is also an active member of ASHRAE where he currently serves as a voting member of SSPC 62.2 on Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings and as chairman of SSPC 90.2 on Energy Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings.  He also serves on the International Standards Organization’s TC163 WG4 on Energy Performance of Buildings.

Tom is a QA and LEED for Homes specialist at EnergyLogic. He got his start in the construction industry swinging a hammer for his uncle’s home remodeling company. Tom has been rating new homes under the LEED for Homes and EnergyStar rating systems since 2010, and has experience working with all construction types – from custom single family to mid-rise multifamily. With his background in the construction world, Tom’s specialty is working with and training trade contractors onsite to ensure there is full buy-in across the spectrum with the requirements of the LEED process.

Dean is the technical manager for EPA’s ENERGY STAR Certified Homes program, which he has helped support, define, and implement for over a decade. With over 1.5 million homes certified, ENERGY STAR is the nation’s largest voluntary residential market transformation program, delivering cost-effective energy-efficient homes while improving their durability, comfort, and quality.

Todd Gamboa, President of Building Trust LLC, has been in the building industry for almost 30 years, managing private and public homebuilding companies. As a building science consultant and public speaker, he has trained thousands of builders, architects, contractors, code officials, appraisers, and REALTORS® across the country. He has launched and managed energy efficiency programs for state and federal governmental agencies and utility providers. His interactive and effective sales trainings are offered by utility companies, builder and Realtor associations, “Green” businesses, and NFP organizations throughout the US. He has created energy saving programs for the US Government – Dept of Defense/US Army and is managing a High Performance Homes program for the Colorado Energy Office. Mr. Gamboa is also an inductee into the Built Green Hall of Fame and recipient of several US Government Sustainability Awards.

When not working, Mr. Gamboa is also the proud father of four, carpenter, musician and lifelong athlete. He volunteers helping people with special needs and enjoys coaching high school football.

Mat Gates founded Residential Science Resources (RSR) in 2004. As CEO and Owner, Gates leads RSR in the development of energy savings?programs for utilities and municipalities in several states. As a Building Science Consultant and industry leader, Gates strives to educate professionals and homeowners about home health, safety, comfort, durability, and energy efficiency. His efforts have led to consultation of over 50,000 homes across the country.
Gates is also is the developer of HouseRater®, a unique and powerful proprietary software that allows efficient tracking and management of energy savings program data for utilities and others. HouseRater provides detailed, easy-to-read reports for builders, code officials, and homeowners.

John Gillett has worked for 14 years at Energy Inspectors helping to build the companies operational capacities across 5 western states. Over that time period the company has provided 3rd party inspection services for over 200,000 production homes.

With a focus on energy efficiency and sustainable consulting, the company now works with 18 of the top 20 homebuilders in one or more of their markets throughout the United States.
Currently employing over 120 personnel, Energy Inspectors has grown to become one of the preeminent building science consulting firms in the nation under Mr. Gillett’s stewardship.

Matt Gingrich has worked at Energy Diagnostics for nearly twelve years, as a Rater, Green Verifier, and QAD. During his time at the Midwest based firm, he has seen the evolution of the industry, and the impacts of energy efficient construction. In 2015 he was elected to the RESNET Board of Directors, and currently holds a Rater Representative seat. He is the co-chair of the RESNET Emerging Leadership Council, and is looking forward to recruiting new members for the group.

David B. Goldstein has worked on energy efficiency and energy policy since the early 1970s.  He currently co-directs NRDC's Energy Program. 

Dr. Goldstein has been instrumental in the development of energy efficiency standards for new buildings and appliances that are currently in effect at the regional and national level in the United States, Russia, Kazakhstan, and China. He was a founding director of the Institute for Market Transformation, the Consortium for Energy Efficiency and the New Buildings Institute.

David B. Goldstein received a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California at Berkeley, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the recipient of its Leo Szilard Award for Physics in the Public Interest. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002 and is the recipient of the California Alumni Association’s 2003 Award for Excellence in Achievement. He is also the author of “Saving Energy Growing Jobs” and “Invisible Energy.”

Ben has been in the residential energy industry for 7 fantastic years and with EnergyLogic for 6.  Ben started performing audits on older homes in the Washington DC area then started rating new construction when he moved to the Denver metro area.  Ben continues to HERS rate and certify homes for Energy Star, DOE, and LEED programs but has transitioned into a Quality Assurance / Trainer role for EnergyLogic and their Providership. Ben received a bachelor’s degree from the Rubenstein School of Natural Resources at the University of Vermont where he studied resource management and energy modeling. While design and implementation are very important parts of our energy efficient future, Ben has a passion for educating energy users and changing their energy use habits. Ben still looks forward to the occasional Energy Audit and chatting with home owners about how energy moves through their homes and lives.

Throughout her thirty-year career, Kathy has worked in many sectors of the energy efficiency field, from research at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) to college campus programs to community/non-profit approaches. As Senior Vice President of Program Services for Performance Systems Development (PSD), Kathy is responsible for leading PSD’s growing energy efficiency program team and providing oversight to the design, management, and implementation of energy efficiency programs and services across multiple states. In Pennsylvania, Kathy and her team served in an integral role in developing the residential efficiency industry across the Commonwealth through the development of the award winning statewide ENERGY STAR New Homes and Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program, PA Home Energy.

When not working to improve the efficiency of the built environment, Kathy enjoys spending time with her two grown daughters, and traveling, and has visited over 22 countries across the globe, bringing home both incredible memories and a growing repertoire of culinary skills. Kathy has a Master’s degree in Energy and Resources from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from La Salle College, and has recently relocated back to her hometown in Philadelphia.

Neil manages the Residential New Homes program at the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and works with utilities across the region to support local builders and Rating companies. Neil started working for a public utility in Tacoma, Washington in 2005 and gained experience in designing, planning, and implementing energy efficiency programs along with public outreach and education. Neil holds an Urban Studies degree from the University of Washington and currently resides in Portland Oregon.

As a RESNET Quality Assurance Designee (QAD), Jenna manages the Southface Energy Rated Homes (SERH) providership and serves as a mentor and technical advisor for new and existing independent HERS raters. She oversees the ENERGY STAR, Indoor airPLUS and WaterSense programs and provides training support for a variety of Southface trainings such as HERS and ENERGY STAR.  She has previously aided in implementing building science research for Building America, LBNL, and NREL.  Additionally, she’s serving as a volunteer for the RESNET QA Training Committee as well as the American Tiny House Association.  Jenna is certified as a RESNET Trainer, HERS Rater, WaterSense QAD, LEED for Homes Green Rater, EarthCraft Technical Advisor, and BPI Building Analyst Professional.  She holds an undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Georgia, and is currently an Engineer-in-Training.

Charlie Haack is a consultant with ICF International, where he works on residential energy efficiency policy development, energy code development , and utility energy efficiency program implementation. Charlie has provided technical programmatic support for the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR Certified Homes program since 2010. Prior to joining ICF International, Charlie served as ASHRAE’s public policy intern in Washington, DC. Charlie is a BPI certified Building Analyst and LEED accredited professional.

Benjamin Hannas is a Senior Analyst at Ecotope with 12 years of experience in evaluation and analysis of efficiency in buildings and building systems. He has a background in residential field data collection and analysis, applied mathematics, physics, data mining, and programming. Over the years, Mr. Hannas has modeled proposed residential state energy codes, analyzed data from field code evaluations, and developed forecasting models for evaluating municipal-level efficiency measures in both new and existing buildings. Mr. Hannas is adept at algorithm implementation, data gathering and exploration, data automation, process definition and improvement, research in current industry trends, and internal benchmarking. He is also accomplished in developing strategic and operational predictive models.

C.R. Herro is Vice President of Environmental Affairs for Meritage Homes, a large-volume national home builder. CR leads their Energy and Innovation Program, which combines design, energy efficiency, water management, sustainability, and new technologies to establish a new standard in home building that provides better comfort and healthier air as well as less cost to own and operate.  In the last three years, Meritage has received numerous awards, including the EnergyValue Housing Award, Best Green Building Program Award, NAHB Builder of the Year and the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year–Sustained Excellence Award, recognizing ongoing industry leadership.

C.R. earned a Bachelors of Science at Arizona State University in Physical and Life Science, a Masters in Environmental Science from Governors State, and a Doctorate in Environmental Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. CR serves as President of the Board of Directors for the Energy & Environmental Building Alliance, the RESNet Standards Development Committee, the Board of Directors for the Green Chamber of Commerce, the Technical Committee for the Leading Builders of America, and the Ibacos Best Practice Research Alliance. 

CR is a dynamic public speaker, who is convinced building higher-performance homes can win market share and improve profit performance. He has appeared before numerous groups nationally as an advocate to advance the industry, encourage rational regulations and bring associated stakeholders together toward adopting credible improvements to the function, performance, and long term value of new homes.

Clinton has over 11 years of experience with home energy ratings, energy rating quality assurance, voluntary building programs, national energy rating and program standards, and related technology. Clinton served as the national quality assurance manager of RESNET, where in addition to providing approval and compliance reviews for rating providers, he contributed to RESNET standards and policy including working to align with other national and regional oversight bodies and contributing to the roll out of the first RESNET national buildings registry. Clinton’s current role with Pivotal Energy Solutions includes strategic planning, training, project management, software specification and testing, and user support. He wants to help meld building science, business compliance, and information technology to make the building performance industry more efficient.

Rebecca Hudson currently manages the ENERGY STAR Multifamily High Rise Program. She has been with the ENERGY STAR program for more than six years during which time she has also worked on Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, provided technical support for ENERGY STAR Certified Homes, and redeveloped the ENERGY STAR Home Advisor. Rebecca graduated from Yale University with a BS in Chemistry and Physics and from Columbia University with a MPA in Environmental Science and Policy. She is currently the vice chair of RESNET’s Multifamily sub-committee.

Nick Hurst is the Program Manager for EPA's Indoor airPLUS Program. He is a BPI Building Analyst and LEED AP (Homes), and he holds a Master of Science in Technology concentrating in Building Science. Formerly a home builder, remodeler, trainer, and consultant, Nick now coordinates residential IAQ initiatives in EPA’s Indoor Environments Division, supporting industry professionals in building, verifying, and marketing high performance homes

Business Development Manager, James Jackson has over 15 years of experience in the field of energy efficiency and electric distribution. He is a certified BPI Building Analyst-Envelop Professional, RESNET HERS Rater, Level 1 Thermographer, and has completed the ACCA EPIC instructor training for HVAC design. James has also worked in the HVAC industry as a designer/installer and has experience working in the new home construction industry. Over 12+ years working for an electric utility, James worked on multiple energy efficiency projects to include agricultural/industrial demand side management, HVAC demand side management, home energy audits and new construction consulting. James is a seasoned trainer, presenting at conferences such as RESNET and ACI, providing a real world perspective on the materials covered. He also conducts residential HVAC design classes for utility programs.

Linda is a graduate from the University of Toronto with a Masters in Applied Science and Chemical Engineering.  She has more than 24 years experience with Dow in the chemicals and construction industry with a focus on material science, application development and building performance.  She is a Building science expert on insulation products, thermal and moisture performance of building envelopes, and air sealing solutions.  For the past 5 years, she is a registered continuing education trainer with the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth - Bureau of Construction Codes.  Linda is currently on the RESNET Technical Standard Calculation Sub-Committee.

Dr. Karagiozis is Director, Building Science at Owens Corning.
He is responsible for leading, shaping, driving, educating and training others in energy efficiency and green building science at Owens Corning. His activities involve feeding Owens Corning’s innovation pipeline with customer-inspired and building science-informed solutions.

Previously, Dr. Karagiozis was a distinguished research and development engineer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He was in charge of research performed at ORNL in heat, air and moisture performance of buildings.

Dr. Karagiozis is one of the leading building scientists in North America. He has been performing building science research for the past 20 years, trained more than 1000 professionals in moisture design, and championed and assisted in the development of innovative material systems and concepts. Research activities have been concentrated in energy efficiency, healthy, durable and sustainable building designs, housing integration issues, wireless route sensing, whole building performance applications, heating, ventilating and air conditioning of buildings and hygrothermal performance of envelopes.

Dr. Karagiozis is still involved in the WUFI-ORNL development team, working closely with ORNL and Fraunhofer Institute. He was the U.S. representative for IEA Annex 55 on Retrofit Analysis in Buildings, and is involved in a number of ASTM E06 technical committees and ASHRAE TC 4.4, and SPC 160. He has also developed three or four of the world's most advanced hygrothermal models worldwide (WUFI, MOISTUREEXPERT, LATENITE family). As an expert in the area of Moisture Engineering, he has solved many hygrothermal designs and retrofit challenges, and has developed multiple design guidelines for various envelope systems. Dr. Karagiozis is the author of more than 120 technical papers and reports related to moisture

Rick Karg was trained as an economist, was a building contractor for ten years, and is now the president of Residential Energy Dynamics, LLC, a firm providing energy-related and building diagnostics web applications for energy analysts. He is also the owner R.J. Karg Associates, a consulting firm working with weatherization programs and utilities since 1980. Mr. Karg has been a member of the ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation committee since 2007, was a charter member of the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code board, managed the Maine Home Performance Program for three years, and is an editorial advisor for Home Energy magazine.

Katrina Keeley is a Product/Application Development Engineer with Owens Corning’s Insulation Business working with builders, code officials, contractors, energy raters, and building scientists on new construction practices. She joined Owens Corning in 2010 after completing her Master’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University.

Mr. Kiker is Vice President, Marketing and Communications for the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association. In this capacity, Mr. Kiker develops the implements marketing and communications strategies to support fiberglass, rock and slag wool insulation products for NAIMA’s core audiences of residential and commercial builders, specifiers of institutional and industrial processes, engineers, architects and consumers.

Prior to joining NAIMA, Mr. Kiker was Communications Manager for the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), where he developed marketing strategy and managed media relations, social media outreach and other communications. Mr. Kiker also previously held a variety of communications positions, including a stint as an associate producer for CBS’s Face the Nation.

Cy Kilbourn is co-founder and Director of Engineering at Ekotrope, a software company that helps building designers make smart energy decisions and reduce construction costs.  He spent time at Brown University and M.I.T. developing the patented optimization algorithms behind Ekotrope software and lead the development effort to establish Ekotrope as a RESNET accredited HERS Rating software.  Since then, he has worked with some of the largest builders in the country to help improve their energy design strategies and with some of the leading HERS Rating Providers to understand their needs and develop HERS Rating software solutions.

Nate Kleist is a Purdue alumnus (Boiler Up!), HERS rater, IHCDA weatherization auditor, is ICC certified and specializes in energy codes and design.  He has spent the last seven years fine tuning his expertise in the home energy rating industry at Energy Diagnostics, a Midwest rating firm based in Indiana, Michigan and Illinois.  Nate works with and trains builders, code officials, design professionals and contractors on energy codes and industry best practices.   He specializes in current IECC, and is involved in future development of energy codes.  Nate has worked under several different variations of the 2009, 2012 and 2015 IECC, giving him a unique and robust look at the state adoption process, along with the benefits and concerns of each code and corresponding amendments.

Jason La Fleur founded Eco Achievers in 2007 to help owners, builders, architects and developers realize that incorporating green building practices is not only achievable but also rewarding. Jason oversees client services helping project teams develop design and construction strategies to build better-performing buildings. Additionally, he directs education programs and helps project teams throughout the upper Midwest build third-party verified green homes that meet LEED and ENERGY STAR standards.

Active locally, Jason is active in the community,  helping found and direct the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Illinois chapter’s annual GreenBuilt Home Tour. He is a national speaker on topics related to residential green building, building science, and healthy construction practices, receiving USGBC Illinois chapter’s “Green Speak” and Chapter Leader Awards. He is also an active member of the Passive House Alliance of Chicago.

As an experience speaker and educator, Jason LaFleur instructs on the Appraisal Institute’s green building courses, LEED, GreenStar, Building Science topics. As a practitioner he works with multifamily clients that want durable Class A buildings with minimal operating expenses, and single family clients pursuing zero energy. He is credentialed LEED for Homes Green Rater, NGBS Green Verifier, RESNET rater, PHIUS+ rater, and Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC).

Roger Lange, Vice President for Bonded Builders Warranty Group is responsible for product design, development, compliance and operations for this national provider of third party backed warranties for new home builders.   Roger has extensive experience in product development for several financial service products, most recently building innovative warranty programs and systems for builders, lenders and homeowners. Roger has implemented many automated processes to build efficient customer focused services.  The most recent innovation for Bonded Builders has been development of the revolutionary Residential Energy Guarantee product providing builders with a whole home energy use guarantee to put behind their energy efficient construction.

Brennan is a building science researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL), where he manages all aspects of research projects in energy, ventilation and IAQ in new and existing homes. He is experienced in all aspects of buildings research, including research design, metering and sensors, statistical computing and programming, building simulation, and construction, inspection and testing of buildings. His recent work has focused on the development of smart ventilation controls and the performance of sealed and insulated attics.

Jamie Lyons is a mechanical and environmental engineer with two decades of experience in high performance buildings and energy efficient technologies.  His areas of focus include technical support for high performance building programs; R&D on emerging technologies; training of industry groups; strategic planning; and codes/standards development.  Jamie routinely works with different industry groups including federal agencies (US DOE; US HUD); utilities, builders, energy raters, manufacturers, code officials, and housing non-profits on energy-related projects.  For the U.S. DOE Zero Energy Ready Home program, Jamie manages the technical specs, trains builders and raters, and supports partnerships with states and utilities.  Jamie is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Maryland, a member of ASHRAE, and holds a BS from the University of Virginia (Mechanical Engineering) and an MS from Johns Hopkins University (Environmental Engineering).

Ethan MacCormick has been with Performance Systems Development since 2003 as an Energy Rater/Building Analyst, software developer, Home Performance Contractor/Manager, and extensively as a Building Science trainer. He is a BPI field super-proctor, a RESNET trainer, and has presented on home performance, software, and training at several conferences. Ethan is the chief technical lead for PSD’s Efficiency Programs deployment team. Prior to joining PSD, he built homes professionally since the early 1980s.

Eric Makela, Senior Associate,   is the team lead for the Codes and Standards team at Cadmus Group.  Eric’s building energy codes expertise spans 30 years, numerous states, and countries as diverse as Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Fiji, and India. Makela served on the ICC IECC Code Development Committee for four cycles, and now represents the Northwest Energy Codes Group in developing IECC code change proposals.  In addition, he represented DOE on a team that developed a commercial code change proposal for the IECC that resulted in a 25% increase in efficiency over earlier codes. As a partner in Britt/Makela Group, Eric oversaw commercial and residential energy code compliance studies for 4 states and 4 large cities.  Makela served as a senior member of the U.S. DOE Building Energy Codes Program where his focus was on outreach and education to states and national stakeholders including the International Code Council, Building Code Assistance Project and the Regional Energy Efficiency Organizations.  Over his career Makela has trained in over 20 states to the building, design and enforcement industry in a variety of venues.  Makela was a recipient of the 2009 Jeffrey A. Johnson Award and the 2008 Canyon County Habitat for Humanity Volunteer of the Year. He has a B.A. in environmental studies from Sonoma State University and an M.A. in education from California State University, Sacramento.

Chris McTaggart of Building Efficiency Resources (BER) is the QA/QC manager in support of the PHIUS+ Rater program. BER is a national third-party RESNET QA Provider working with independent rating companies throughout the United States. He recently completed the PHIUS Certified Passive House Consultant training program.

His experience in research, analysis and logic developed both through his professional experience and formal education at Michigan State University. His areas of interest are in energy modeling, energy efficiency programs, and Net-Zero energy building projects. Throughout his career as a HERS Rater, BPI Building Analyst, QAD and Trainer, Chris has served as QAD for three RESNET Rating Providers, performed over 300 HERS ratings, 100+ home performance assessments, and has mentored over 50 Provisional HERS Raters. Additionally, Chris has written a variety of technical articles.

He provides practical “universal” training and communication skills to professionals like yourself. He is a Comfort Consultant Trainer, providing solutions on home performance applications.

He developed energy management curriculum for Technical College System of Georgia, and was the Energy Manager at University of Georgia, Tifton campus.

His certifications include:  BPI Proctor - Building Analyst & Envelope Professional, Infiltration & Duct Leakage, ICC- Commercial & Residential Energy Inspector / Plans Examiner and Residential Building Inspector, NABCEP PV Certified, Inactive HERS Rater and IAQ Professional.

Vrushali Mendon is a research engineer with PNNL’s Building Energy Codes Program. Since joining PNNL in 2010, she has been a core member of the Residential and Commercial Building Energy Codes R&D team and PNNL’s Building Energy Simulation Team. In building energy codes, her primary area of focus is residential buildings and the IECC. She has also conducted large scale simulation analyses for the Army and the Masonry Alliance. More recently, she has been working on the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration project and on exploring the peak demand reduction potential of building energy codes with utilities in Nebraska.

Ryan has 10 years of experience in energy efficiency, energy policy and building energy codes and has published more than two dozen case studies, reports and resources on those topics.

Alexi Miller is a Senior Project Manager at NBI and is NBI’s lead engineer. He brings insight and analysis about cutting-edge technologies and strategies to diverse stakeholders as part of a wide-ranging effort to improve the energy performance of the built environment. Alexi leads several programs and initiatives at NBI including Zero Energy Building Certification, the GridOptimal Initiative, Community Strategic Energy Management and the Getting to Zero Buildings Database. He manages the development of FirstView, NBI’s remote virtual energy audit software tool. Alexi has expertise in topics including zero net energy buildings, codes and policies, building controls, deep energy savings retrofits, and emerging technologies. Prior to joining NBI in 2013, he spent six years at The Cadmus Group. Alexi is a registered Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering, LEED-AP+ accredited (Operations & Maintenance specialty). In his spare time he skis, paraglides, reads good books and brews his own beer (though not all at once). He is fully fluent in Spanish and conversationally fluent in Portuguese.

James L. Murrett, MAI, SRA, of Hamburg, New York, is the 2018 president of the Appraisal Institute. He will serve as immediate past president in 2019. He serves this year as chair of the organization’s Executive Committee and chairs its policy-setting Board of Directors.

Murrett has served on the Appraisal Institute’s national Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Committee and as chair of the Finance Committee, in addition to many chapter roles, including as president of the Upstate New York Chapter. He also has been treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Center for Valuation Certification, an affiliate of the Appraisal Institute.

He received the 2014 Appraisal Institute Edward W. Adams, SRA, Outstanding Board Service Award and the 2008 President’s Award, which is presented by the Upstate New York Chapter of the Appraisal Institute for ongoing commitment, dedication and service to the chapter and the profession.

Murrett received a bachelor’s degree in business management from Walsh University, in Canton, Ohio.
Since 2009, he has been in management roles with Colliers International Valuation & Advisory Services, currently as the executive managing director, Compliance & Quality Assurance, where he is responsible for the general oversight of appraisal quality for Colliers.

Gary Nelson is president of The Energy Conservatory, which he co-founded in 1983, and which is known worldwide as a leader in the design, manufacture, and sales of building performance testing equipment, including the Minneapolis Blower Door and Duct Blaster®. Many of the standard procedures used by building performance technicians to diagnose and measure house and duct leakage were developed by Gary and first published in the operating manuals for Energy Conservatory products. Gary is frequently involved in designing measurement techniques for special situations and has made measurements and diagnosed problems in hundreds of buildings. 

Glenn Pease is the Manager of Quality Assurance for EnergyLogic and serves as a trainer and mentor for HERS Raters across the country. He has a hand in teaching a variety of courses for RESNET HERS Raters that includes ENERGY STAR V3, SketchUp for Raters, Multifamily HERS Ratings, Tips and Tricks of REM Rate, and Tips and Tricks on the New Home Builder Tax Credit. Glenn began his career at Southface Institute in 2007, where he worked as a HERS Rater in the EarthCraft House program.  He expanded his roles to include providing technical support for homeowners and contractors in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program, and assisted with various training roles during BPI and RESNET Trainings.  At EnergyLogic, Glenn has expanded his training repertoire and worked with rating companies across the country to assure compliance with the RESNET Standard and provide technical assistance along the way. Glenn applies his strong background in technical support and experience in the industry to help mentor and guide energy raters, utility program administrators, and independent RESNET QA Providers. Glenn now resides in Loveland, CO where he enjoys hiking, camping, watching football and basketball and especially spending time with his 4 year old son.

Firstly, he manages Southface and the Atlanta Home Builder’s Association’s EarthCraft Communities program. He provides technical assistance, programmatic assistance, and design review services for all projects that pass through the EarthCraft Communities program. Secondly, David is the Quality Assurance Designee and Rater Trainer for the Southface Energy Rated Homes HERS Providership. He received his BA in Environmental Studies from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Chuck Perry is a Program Director at the Appalachian State Energy Center, a part-time lecturer at Appalachian State University and the owner of PerryBuilt, LLC, a homebuilding and property management company in Boone, NC. For the past 25 years he has worked in the homebuilding industry as a trainer, consultant and general contractor. Through the NC Builder Institute and Appalachian State he offers training to most stakeholders in the industry. This year they added insulation installers to the mix and it was both exciting and eye opening.

Ari leads IBACOS’ Research Initiatives team. IBACOS Research Initiatives partners with state and federal governments and other industry stakeholders to research, develop and integrate new building technologies and methods into the homebuilding and home retrofit industries.

Ari has ten years of experience performing Home Energy Rating System (HERS) home energy ratings per Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) Standards, and works with homebuilders to certify homes under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) ENERGY STAR for New Homes program. He is a champion for the DOE’s Zero Energy Ready Home program.

As Chief Architect for the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office, Sam’s primary role is leading deployment of proven innovations for new and existing high-performance homes. This includes helping lead DOE’s world-class research program, Building America and overseeing the DOE Zero Energy Ready Home voluntary labeling program for leading edge builders. In his prior position, he managed ENERGY STAR for Homes since its start in 1996.  Under his leadership, ENERGY STAR for Homes grew exponentially to more than 8,500 builder partners, over one million labeled homes, and over 25 percent market penetration nationwide. Mr. Rashkin was most recently recognized for his contributions to sustainable housing with the 2012 Hanley Award. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University; completed Masters of Urban Planning studies at New York University; and is a registered architect in California and New York.  During his 20-plus years as a licensed architect, he specialized in energy efficient design and completed over 100 residential projects.  He has served on the national Steering Committees for USGBC’s LEED for Homes, NAHB’s Green Builder Guidelines, and EPA’s Water Sense label, and on the development team for EPA’s Indoor airPLUS label. Sam has authored a new book titled “Retooling the U.S. Housing Industry: How It Got Here, Why It’s Broken, and How to Fix It” that presents a comprehensive strategy for transforming the homeownership experience. Sam has also prepared hundreds of articles, technical papers, reports, and seminars; and contributed to other books on energy efficient and green construction.

Michael Resech is responsible for the daily operation of three major utility New Homes Programs for RSR. Resech develops and implements program improvements to keep up with the changing energy and building code requirements. He also develops program and implementation strategies for new markets.

Resech received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from the University of Minnesota and has over twelve years of experience in commercial and residential envelope design.

Ray Rite is a Principal Engineer in the Advanced Solutions group at Ingersoll Rand Residential HVAC involved in the development of advanced HVAC systems as well as the modeling of air conditioning/heat pump systems and components.
Previously, he was an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Portland, as well as a thermal systems engineer for Ingersoll Rand/Trane Commercial HVAC.  Ray earned Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan. He has been a member of ASHRAE since 1991 and is currently the chair of Technical Committee 1.3 Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow and a voting member of T 8.11 Unitary and Room Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps.

David joined NREL in 2008. David is the Residential Buildings Research Group Manager. He currently supports DOE research activities including the Building America program. Alice Rosenberg is a Senior Program Manager at Consortium for Energy Efficiency. CEE is the US and Canadian consortium of gas and electric efficiency program administrators, working together to accelerate the development and availability of energy efficient products and services for lasting public benefit. Alice oversees and leads activities of the Residential Whole House Committee, which covers efforts related to new construction, existing homes, and windows. Within new homes, she facilitates members to build consensus positions and identify roles where bi-national consistency can significantly impact the market. Her technical expertise includes building envelop, air sealing, windows, attachments and coverings, insulation, and building systems. Alice holds a Bachelors of Arts from Colgate University and a Masters of Architecture from M.I.T.

Ziv Rozenblum is a co-founder and CEO of Ekotrope. Ziv is an industry executive (HP, Archibus, Israeli Air Force) with over 20 years of experience in R&D and business capacities. Ziv's experience includes defining, building and leading multi-million dollar solutions for managing buildings and energy systems. Ziv holds an M.S. in Engineering and Management from MIT Sloan, M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Tel-Aviv University, B.S., Cum Laude, in Mechanical Engineering from the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) and B.A., Cum Laude, in Computer Science from Bar-Ilan University. Ziv lives happily in Boston, MA with his wife and three young kids and enjoys scuba diving, reading and hiking. When he was much younger he was a professional basketball trainer and scaled Mount Kenya (the second highest mountain in Africa).

Robert Salcido is the Principal with Salcido Solutions, a consulting firm specializing in software design, building science, energy modeling and building energy analysis. Mr. Salcido started Salcido Solutions in 2015 after departing NORESCO.   He worked at AEC/NORESCO for 16 years with the last 8 years as REM/Rate Program Manager and has been working in the area of energy efficiency in buildings since 1992. He has a Bachelors degree in Environmental Resources Engineering from Humboldt State University in California as well as a Masters in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also a registered Professional Engineer in Colorado.

Jonah Schein is the Technical Coordinator for Homes & Buildings at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense® Program. He has overseen the technical development and implementation of the WaterSense New Homes specification and certification system since their inception. He is also responsible for efforts to expand the WaterSesne program's reach in the multi-family and commercial sectors. Prior to joining EPA in 2008, Mr. Schein served as the Director of Outreach for Earth Day Network (EDN) where he was responsible for a number of initiatives to promote water efficiency through green building strategies in the United States and Middle East. Mr. Schein holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from Indiana University as well as a Master of Science in Environmental Science from the Johns Hopkins University.

Amy Schmidt joined the Dow Building & Construction in 2007. 

She leads a team that is responsible for Dow’s code development and adoption activities and serves as the team’s subject matter expert on energy codes.  She also leads energy code related legislative efforts at the state level.

Amy serves on the ASHRAE 90.1 and 90.2 committees, the RESNET SDC 300 and is actively involved with ICC code development.  She represents Dow on several industry groups including the Extruded Polystyrene Association, and American Chemistry Council’s Foam Sheathing Committee and Center for the Polyurethanes Industry and serves on the Board of Directors for the Alliance for National Community Resilience.

Amy holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northwood University and is certified as a LEED Green Associate.

Robby Schwarz is a principle with EnergyLogic, Inc. a Colorado based energy services organization primarily serving the residential construction industry.  For the last 20+ years he has worked in the building performance, applied building science and system thinking field helping Builders, Code jurisdictions, and Homeowners understand how their houses perform. Currently Robby is Director of Builder Relations for EnergyLogic; the largest energy rating and building consulting firm of its kind in Colorado.

Elliot Seibert is an environmental specialist with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Residential Branch, focusing on technical development and quality assurance. Mr. Seibert came to EPA with eight years of experience in the residential energy efficiency industry managing thousands of single family and multifamily HERS ratings, ENERGY STAR and green building certifications as a HERS Rater and HERS Quality Assurance Designee. As a mechanical engineer by training, he has a thorough knowledge of building science and has supported mechanical system design, building system commissioning and comprehensive energy audits.

Mark Smith has worked at the Owens Corning Science & Technology Center for 43 years. His work includes product testing, installation training and new product development. He runs training classes on site and in the field for installing duct board, duct wrap, flex duct and duct liner board. Mark is currently part of the Owens Corning Builder team working on a number of high performance systems to help builders meet the 2018 IECC Energy code.

Sowers is a RESNET certified Quality Assurance Designee and oversees RESNET Quality Assurance requirements for three companies in two states. Sowers began his role at RSR in the Energy Modeling department where he was a HERS rater. He then joined the Program Administration team where he assisted with daily operations of three utility programs in Minnesota.

Sowers cut his teeth in the world of residential energy conservation at a Twin Cities non-profit called Center for Energy and Environment, through a conservation corps position. His passion for energy efficiency and environmental improvement soon won him a full time role. During his time there, Sowers worked on almost 1,200 homes and helped save an estimated MegaWatt hour of electricity.

Sowers holds a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. He received his Bachelor of Arts in American Culture Studies and Environmental Policy from Bowling Green State University.

Frank Spevak is the marketing and sales manager at the Energy Conservatory.

Nancy St. Hilaire is the co-owner, Operations Manager and Quality Assurance Designee for the Home Energy Group, LLC based out of Charleston, SC.  Home Energy Group started as a HERS Rating company and has expanded into being  a HERS Provider, HERS Training organization, and a LEED for Homes Provider.  Nancy started off as a HERS rater and, as the business expanded, became the Quality Assurance Designee for both the RESENT providership and the LEED for Homes providership as well as a HERS Rater trainer.

Colby Swanson is a serial entrepreneur who exists to challenge the status quo. He has spent over twenty years in the building industry gaining a 360 degree understanding of the construction space. He began as a framer and builder, graduated to a building scientist and forensics investigator, has authored corporate strategy at a Fortune 500 company, and started seven companies.

Peter Troast leads the Energy Circle team and is a passionate advocate for the home performance industry. He drives innovation for the Energy Circle suite of web and marketing tools built exclusively for companies in the home performance, HVAC, insulation, energy rating and low energy building sector. He contributes to the popular Energy Circle blog for home performance professionals nationally and is a frequent presenter at national conferences on topics of energy efficiency marketing and communications, use of social media and energy monitoring.

Mike Turns is a Senior Program Manager with Performance Systems Development and is responsible for a variety of energy code support and new construction programs. Mike is the principal investigator for the Pennsylvania Residential Energy Code Field Study, a DOE-funded project involving measurement of energy code compliance and training, education, and outreach to code officials, builders, and trade professionals.  He also manages implementation residential new construction programs in six utility operating companies across Pennsylvania. Previously, Mike was the Associate Director of the Pennsylvania Housing Research Center (PHRC) at Penn State University. While, at the PHRC, he managed the largest provider of residential building code training in Pennsylvania, and delivered energy code training to hundreds of code officials, builders, design professionals, home performance professionals, and others. Mike is a certified residential energy inspector/plans examiner, and has presented at a variety of state, regional, and national conferences and events.

Gayathri Vijayakumar is a Senior Building Systems Engineer at Steven Winter Associates, Inc., a RESNET Accredited Rating Quality Assurance Provider. She graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Engineering Science and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a MS in Mechanical Engineering and a Graduate Certificate in Energy Policy and Management. Gayathri, an ASHRAE-certified Building Energy Modeling Professional, HERS Rater, and RESNET QA delegate, currently provides technical support to the EPA's Multifamily High Rise program and has over 10 years of experience supporting ENERGY STAR certification of units in multifamily buildings. She currently is a member of the ASHRAE 62.2 Multifamily working group and chair of RESNET’s Multifamily sub-committee.

Dr. Iain Walker  is a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and leads the Residential Building Systems group.  He has more than 20 years of experience as a building scientist and his current work focuses on Indoor Air Quality, retrofits, Zero/Low Energy Homes and HVAC systems in residential buildings.  He is an ASHRAE fellow and serves on several ASHRAE Standards committees. He is Executive Editor of Home Energy magazine.  He is the task group leader for ASTM standards committees on range hood performance, building and duct system air leakage and sealant longevity and serves on Building Performance Institute, RESNET and ACCA Technical Committees, and provides leadership and technical input to many local, state, national and international bodies.

Daran Wastchak is the President of D.R. Wastchak, LLC, a firm based in Tempe, Arizona that specializes in residential energy efficiency and building science consulting.   He has been a key implementer of the EPA’s ENERGY STAR for Homes program in the Phoenix market since 1996, also providing LEED for Homes, IECC and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit services for single and multi-family projects.  Daran has a Bachelor of Science degree from the Del E. Webb School of Construction at Arizona State University as well as a Master’s degree and PhD in Public Administration from ASU.  He is formerly a member of the Energy and Environmental Building Alliance (EEBA) and Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) Board of Directors, including serving as past RESNET Board Secretary and Vice President as well as Chairman of the Quality Assurance Committee.

Eric Werling has been the national director of the U.S. DOE’s Building America program since 2011. Prior to DOE, Eric launched the U.S. EPA’s Indoor airPLUS home labeling program, helped develop and implement the successful ENERGY STAR for New Homes program, and led development of popular IAQ and Moisture Control guides for EPA and ASHRAE. He holds a MS in Architectural Engineering and a MBA from Penn State, and a BS from the U.S. Naval Academy. Eric is also an amateur musician and plays for 2 bands, including the Building Science Boogie Band.

Dr. Weston leads building science and construction technology research. She has developed and
introduced to market many new products and is an inventor of four U.S. patents.
She participates extensively in industry research programs and in standards and codes development. Dr. Weston is on the Board of Directors of the Building Environment and Thermal Envelope Council of the National Institute of Building Science, and has served on the Board of Directors of both the Energy and Environmental Building Association (EEBA) and the Cold Climate Housing Research Council (CCHRC).She is also active in publishing technical papers and presenting at construction industry and building science conferences.

Dr. Weston is actively involved with many professional organizations and chairs technical and standard development committees. She is a member of the executive committee of the ASTM Committee on the Performance of Buildings and chairs the sub-committee on Air Leakage and Ventilation. She also is a member of the ASTM Sustainability Committee. At ASHRAE, she is currently committee Vice-Chair for the Standard for Energy Efficient Design of New Low-Rise Residential Buildings and a past chair of the Technical Committee on Building Materials and Building Envelope Performance.

Born in Montebello, Calif., and raised in the Hollywood Hills, Dr. Weston earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. She has worked for DuPont for over 25 years.

He works in the Building Technologies Office overseeing projects related to building energy codes, including DOE activities surrounding the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1.  He is a LEED A.P. and member of the ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Committee.  His educational background includes an M.S. degree in Construction Management from Michigan State University (MSU), and a B.S. in Business and Education.

Prior to joining DOE, he was a Senior Research Assistant at the MSU Center for Construction Project Performance, Assessment and Improvement (c2p2ai), with a research focus on energy code compliance.  He also coordinated the Michigan Energy Code Training and Implementation Program—a joint effort between the State of Michigan and MSU.  He is also a former high school science instructor, teaching courses in chemistry & physics.

Stephen Willingmyre is an associate in ICF’s Commercial Energy Division. Over the last two years, he has supported the Residential and Commercial Maryland Utilities Energy Efficiency Programs by managing the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) efforts. Stephen has a background in energy efficiency throughout Maryland, having served as an Auditor and Building Engineer prior to joining ICF. Stephen holds certifications as both a BPI Building Analyst and a RESNET HERS Rater.

Amber Wood leads the technical team for REM/Rate and REM/Design. She directs the staff on day to day activities including user support, programming of new features and enhancements, planning and execution of new version releases, and development of custom reference homes and reports for clients. She also focuses on the strategic direction. Amber is involved with providing building science expertise to various RESNET technical committees and task forces.

Mark Wyman is a Program Manager with the Energy Trust Of Oregon, responsible for the design and implementation of the organization’s residential offerings including the New Homes Program, Retail Products Program and On Bill Repayment Financing. Mark has broad public sector and not-for-profit experience within the energy efficiency industry in Oregon as well as New York where he contributed to New York State and New York City’s climate and energy objectives as an employee of the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA), and the Association For Energy Affordability (AEA). Mark lives and works in Portland, Oregon and enjoys hiking and exploring the majestic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

Li Ling Young is an energy consultant with over 15 years of experience in VEIC’s Engineering Division. Her work includes project management, analysis, and verification and measurement for statewide residential work. She specializes in healthy homes, “zero energy” retrofits, and training for builders, residents, and other energy professionals in building science, energy conservation, and high-performance construction. Li Ling is a RESNET certified Energy Rater and Green Rater, as well as a RESNET Quality Assurance Designee and USGBC LEED Rater.
